es uns gehet, sacred cantata for 4 solo voices, chorus, flute, strings &
continuo (formerly BWV 217): Gedenke, Herr, wie es uns gehet
Performer : Alsfelder Vokalensemble
Composer : Johann Christoph Altnickol
Conductor : Wolfgang Helbich
Genre : Cantata
Comment : Gedenke, Herr, wie es uns gehet (Be
mindful of our condition, Lord) / / Cantata 217 / / First Sunday after
Epiphany / Epistle: Romans xii. 1-6 (We are at one in Christ) / Gospel: Luke ii.
41-52 (Jesus in the temple) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / / Rating: 1 / / The
cantatas BWV 217-222 are all now regarded as either being of dubious provenance
or, in some cases, are definitely identified as being by composers other than
J.S. Bach. However, it's worth considering them here because it is still
possible that one or two of them may actually be genuine and since there is also
a good quality recording available of this set (conducted by Wolfgang Helbich on
CPO 999139-2), so that listeners can come to their own conclusions! / / BWV
217 remains in Anhang II of the BWV (which is reserved for works of uncertain
origin that have not yet been definitely identified as being by anybody else). A
hushed and beautiful choral opening leads through a recitative into the
absolutely gorgeous alto aria "Saget mir beliebte Felder". If anything is going
to convince you that this cantata is genuine JSB, then it's the beauty of this
aria, with its gentle flute and orchestra accompaniment. Still, it must be
admitted that there were many talented tunesmiths around at this time. A second
recitative leads into the concluding chorale, beautifully set with orchestral
accompaniment. Perhaps the lilting dance rhythms of this concluding chorale will
convince you that this is not by Bach! / / This cantata, by Bach or not, is a
very nice piece and well worth searching out.

218 has been identified as being by Telemann and is now found as TVWV 1:634 in
the catalogue of his works. A reference for the identification is Dürr, Bach-
Jahrbuch 1951/2, 38f. This ten minute work starts with a jolly and attractive
chorus followed by a fairly undistinguished alto aria. A long four voice
recitative separates this from the pleasing but routine soprano aria. A simple
chorale setting ends the cantata. I find it difficult to believe that this short
work was ever attributed to Bach!

1:1328 in the catalogue of his works. A reference for the identification is
Dürr, Bach-Jahrbuch 1951/2, 39f. The short opening chorus features a choral
fugue with suitable martial trumpets. The trumpets stay centre stage for the
fine triumphant bass aria "Gott stürzet den Hochmuth". A long soprano recitative
leads into a pleasant but rather routine alto aria and the cantata is brought to
a close by a straightforward chorale setting. It's difficult to see why this
might ever have been attributed to Bach!

Anhang II of the BWV (which is reserved for works of uncertain origin that have
not yet been definitely identified as being by anybody else). BWV 220 starts
with a straightforward chorale setting that leads into an attractive tenor aria.
A bass recitative is followed, via an attractive orchestral introduction, by the
fine alto aria "Sich in Gott und Jesu freuen". Having heard little in the
opening movements to suggest JSB as composer, a niggling doubt sets in here. The
orchestral writing, especially for the featured flute and oboe, together with
the strong string melody, suggests a composer of the first rank not too far from
Bach in style. The cantata is rounded off by a lively and attractive chorus.
Well worth hearing, if only for the alto aria.

221 remains in Anhang II of the BWV (which is reserved for works of uncertain
origin that have not yet been definitely identified as being by anybody else)
and is discussed in the critical commentary to NBA I/18. A straightforward and
attractive sinfonia opens the work. To me this is more in a style reminiscent of
Handel than of Bach. A tenor recitative leads into a fine tenor/bass duet which
reinforces this Handelian feeling. A bass recitative then leads into the long
central tenor aria. This is, despite a strong accompanying violin line, less
interesting than would be suggested by what has preceeded it. A bass recitative
leads into a short and attractive bass aria and a final tenor recitative
preceeds the upbeat concluding tenor/bass duet. To my ears, not a single hint of
JSB here!

It's interesting to note that the motet BWV Anh. III 165 is taken from movements
of this work (and you can hear a recording of this motet, again by Wolfgang
Helbich, on CPO 999235-2). The cantata opens with a mournful bass aria with
suitably sombre accompaniment from the choir singing a chorale as a backdrop. A
very long and affecting alto aria maintains the sombre mood. A choral interlude
followed by a simple and beautiful chorale setting leads into another chorale
setting, accompanied by the orchestra, in which the soprano soloist joins in
with the choir. The choir finishes off the work with an upbeat chorus. A strong
pattern, familiar from J.S. Bach's cantatas, is repeated here: Hopelessness is
banished by the joyful release of death. It's difficult to see this ever
seriously having been attributed to J.S. Bach!
